Kagando school of Medical Lab Technology and Theatre Techniques

Who we are

The hospital started training laboratory microscopists in 1970’s and in 1994, started training laboratory attendants who would be given a certificate. In 2011 KARUDEC started a training school to train a certificate and a diploma in medical laboratory technology which are courses recognised by ministry of public service of the republic of Uganda. The school started with a total number of 13 students, with 2 diploma and 9 certificate students. The school was then affiliated to Mengo Hospital School of Medical Laboratory Technology where students would go to sit their UAHEB semester exams.

The school had only one full time teacher and the rest were on part time basis.

In 2013 the school was licenced by Ministry of Education and Sports to offer a Certificate course in Medical Laboratory Techniques and by then the number of students increased.

In 2016 a licence to start training a certificate in Medical Theatre Techniques was given to the school which also started with 21 pioneering students.

In 2017 the school was permitted and licenced to start training a Diploma Course in Medical laboratory technology which also started with 20 students.

School governance:

  1. The Board of governors:

This is the supreme governing body of the entire KARUDEC that sets and approves policies, checks and balances to ensure that the school fulfils its mandate to operate. The Board has different board committees that is, the board committee of finance, board committee of Education, Board committee of human resource.

The Education Board committee is supervises the training schools and is chaired by Rev. Canon Jehoshaphat Bwalhuma, who is currently the Desean Secretary of South Rwenzori Diocese. He worked as KARUDEC Chaplain and Administrator from 1996 to 2005 and 2005 to 2012 respectively.

  1. Executive management:

This is headed by KARUDEC Executive Director (E.D), Rev. Canon Dr Uziah Maate Kiriaghe (PHD). He is the chief coordinator of all administrative and public relations of KARUDEC sectors.

  1. Governing council:

This is the supreme body that over sees the school activities and ensures that set policies are being implemented.
It is chaired by Dr. Rob Morris.

4.Principal

The Principal is the chief coordinator of all administrative, academic and public relations affairs of the school. He links the school to the public and other academic training institutions. He is appointed by the Executive Management of KARUDEC.

Profile:

Rabson Wanzanguhya, has been a Principal since February 2016.

He holds A master of science in Medical Laboratory Technology of Mbarara University of science and Technology, a Bachelor Degree of science in Medical Laboratory Science of Mbarara University of Science and Technology, a Post graduate Diploma in Medical Education of Makerere University, a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology of Mengo Hospital School of Medical laboratory Technology and a Certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology of Chemequip Laboratory Training School-Ishaka.

Rabson won a convocational award of Mbarara University of Science and Technology as the best BMLS student in 2016.

He worked as Head of Microbiology section at Kagando School of Medical Laboratory, he served as a Quality Assurance officer Kagando Hospital main Laboratory, Deputy Laboratory Manager Kagando Hospital Laboratory.

He participated in a Cholera surveillance in Kasese District in conjunction with AFINET, he also participated in a Typhoid surveillance a round Kasese district in conjunction with CDC Atlanta

4.Academic Registrar

He coordinates all matter pertaining to the academic organisation of the school including examinations, research and syllabus and also oversees admissions and records.

Murangi Amos is a senior teacher, he has been teaching since 1997. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Bio-Medical Laboratory Technology of Makerere University, a Post graduate Diploma in Health Management Services of Kabale University and also a Diploma of Jinja Laboratory Training School. He also served as the District Laboratory focal person Kasese.

5.The School Bursar

He manages the financial transactions in the school. He is also responsible for the maintenance of all financial records and proper accounting system of the school.

Kakundese Moses is a student CPA at level III, he holds A master of science in Business Administration-Accounting of Mountains of the Moon University, a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration of Bishop Stuart University.

6.Teacher in-charge of Students Affairs

Mbambu Zonet holds a Bachelors in Bio-Medical Laboratory Technology of Mbarara University and a post graduate Diploma in Medical Education of Bishop stuart University.She coordinates the activities of placing students at the practicum sites and to the community, in-charge of students’ welfare and games sports teacher.

7. Administrative Assistant

MuhyanaMagret, holds a Bachelor in Secretariat of Team University, a diploma and a Certificate in Secretariat and Office Management of Rwenzori College of commerce.

She helps the Principal to meet his objectives and targets by effectively planning his schedules and travels both with in and out the country.

8. Warden

Coordinates activities of student accommodation and is responsible for the welfare and discipline of students in school.

Muhindo Eric, holds a Bachelor of Social works and social Administration of Team University and a diploma in secondary school education from Kyambogo University. He served as a Head teacher Kajwenge CDC Primary School, a Speaker to Council Kyondo sub county-Kasese District.

9.Guild President.

He chairs the Guild cabinet meetings and coordinates all the administrative activities of the guild. He links student’s body to the school administration.

A guild president has one term in office which is an equivalent of one academic year. He/she is elected by students upon a competitive electoral campaigns.
